The test has 20 questions, which are multiple choice or true/false. You have 30 minutes to complete it.

What is the pass mark for the citizenship test?

You need to answer at least 15 of the 20 questions correctly, which is 75%. Our mock exams use the same 20-question, 30-minute format so you can check whether you are ready.

Who has to take the citizenship test?

Generally, applicants who are 18 to 54 years old on the day they sign their citizenship application must take the test. Check IRCC's guidance to confirm the rules for your own situation.

What language is the test in?

How is the test taken?

Most applicants now take the test online after receiving an invitation from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Your invitation explains exactly how and when to take it.

What does the citizenship test cover?

The test covers the content of Discover Canada, the free study guide published by IRCC. Topics include rights and responsibilities, Indigenous peoples, history, government, elections, the justice system, symbols, the economy and Canada's regions.

How many practice questions are there?

There are 603 practice questions covering all 10 chapters of Discover Canada. You can practise by chapter, take timed 20-question mock exams, or review with flashcards.

What happens if I fail the citizenship test?

How long should I study for the citizenship test?

It depends on your background and how much time you have, but many people prepare well with 20 to 30 minutes a day over two to four weeks. A good sign you are ready is scoring consistently above 75% on timed mock tests.
